Coach Bielema Putting on Women's Football Clinic
Jul 20, 2015 - 8:06 PM
"Since I have come here to Arkansas, one big thing is how smart women are about football, probably more so than their husbands," said Head Football Coach Bret Bielema.

Coach Bielema knows a lot of women here know their Xs and Os, and he encourages any who've been sitting on the sidelines to check out the Football 101 program.

"To be around 300 women that want to advance their learning in college football, it's a neat little subset for us to work with," he said.

Football 101 is a night of learning and a good time, but it's not all fun and games. It benefits Komen Ozark and research to find a cure for breast cancer, a disease that hits close to home for Coach B.

"My mom has been a 25-year survivor so it is something close, near and dear to my heart," he said. "I remember getting that phone call, and it makes it so real when you hear cancer and you hear this coming out of your mom's voice."

Many of the Arkansas football staff and players will be at Football 101 - as they have been touched by cancer in one way or another. They'll teach participants the fundamentals of the game, and even give them tours of the new razorback facilities. The event was a huge success last year.

"When I heard that we had raised close to $30,000 last year, just an amazing number, hopefully we can do that and even better this year," Coach B. said.

He looks forward to an even bigger and better event this year, and especially meeting one very special group of ladies who will be attending.

"The tip of the iceberg is to watch the whole thing is the interaction of the survivors," he said. "To know my mom's walking this earth for as long as she has and I know we give them a special recognition that night to set them apart. I always try to grab their hand and say 'congratulations, how long have you been a survivor?' and to see the smile on their face, whether it's two months or 20 years it's just a feather in their cap and I think that is always a special time of the night."
